Things to do in Comitán de Domínguez? Just 21 km away (about 30 minutes), on the road to San Francisco Uninajab, lies the Cenote Chucumaltik —whose name means The Hidden Beauty—, a natural wonder roughly 200 meters wide and 61 meters deep, surrounded by lush vegetation.
At the bottom you can spot sulfur chimneys, petrified trees, calcite deposits, tunnels and caverns, as well as an image of the Virgin of Sorrows. It is a must-see for swimming, diving and enjoying nature.

Open every day, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Duration: a visit to swim and walk around can take an afternoon; diving takes up almost the whole day (starting in the morning).
Getting there
- By private car: this is the only way to get there that we know of so far. From Comitán it is about 30 minutes (21 km) along the road to San Francisco Uninajab. There is parking on site.
Activities
- Swimming in the cenote.
- Hiking (a trail of about 1 km).
- Kayaking (rental around $200 MXN per hour).
- Diving (a separate activity: arranged on site and taking up almost the whole day, as it includes training for beginners).

No booking required to swim: access is direct during opening hours. Diving is arranged directly on site.
Recommendations
- Bring swimwear, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Bring water (very important) and some food or snacks: there are no shops nearby.
- Bring toilet paper (the restrooms are basic).
- If you like, you can rent a life jacket (~$100 MXN) or a kayak (~$200 MXN per hour) on site.
